Dr. Wanderson Bucker Moraes, originally from Brazil, received his B.Sc. degree in Agronomy from the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Brazil, in 2011. He began his career in applied plant pathology and plant disease epidemiology as an undergraduate research associate, working with Dr. Waldir Cintra de Jesus Junior on projects that involved developing models to evaluate the potential impact of climate change on plant diseases. He later joined the MS program in the Department of Plant Pathology at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Brazil, under the guidance of Dr. Luiz Antônio Maffia, where he studied the spatio-temporal dynamics of Ceratocystis wilt in mango and its association with insect vectors, using Bayesian approaches to characterize epidemics in space and time with the goal of determining dispersal mechanisms of the disease. In 2014, Dr. Moraes joined the Paul lab. in the Department of Plant Pathology at The Ohio State University (OSU) as visiting scholar, and two years later, began a Ph.D. program in the same department under the guidance of Dr. Pierce A. Paul, with Dr. Laurence Madden as his co-advisor. He graduated with his degree in Plant Pathology with Minor in Statistic in the Fall of 2021. During his Ph.D., he worked on several projects dealing with the epidemiology and integrated management of Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat. His research focused on the use of linear and generalized linear mixed models to quantify and model the effects of environmental conditions on FHB and its associated mycotoxins and the efficacy of integrated management programs for their control. In one of his projects, he used novel approaches to investigate the effects of sample size on the accuracy of estimated mean FHB index in research plots. His work was acknowledged with a 1st place award for a paper presented at the 2021 National Fusarium Head Blight Forum. Wanderson is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at OSU, continuing research on mycotoxins in corn and wheat.
