Biography:

As an ecologist, I have always been interested in learning more about how organisms define their niche. Specifically, what characteristics are most important for an organism to survive and function in their environment? Furthermore, how have species evolved and individual organisms adapted to these often variable environmental conditions?

As a student in Dr. Dorrance’s lab, my research focuses on better understanding the environmental conditions most suitable for various soil borne pathogens of soybeans. Because soil borne pathogens have the potential to cause significant crop loss, management of these pathogens is essential to optimize yield and minimize disease. Management strategies rely on a basic understanding of pathogen niche preferences, and this is what I hope to better define.

I am part of a larger collaboration of OSU researchers who are working to update the soil fertility recommendations for soybean in Ohio, as current recommendations are over 20 years old. In an effort to evaluate these recommendations and fertility needs of modern cultivars, a more holistic understanding of how soil fertility may or may not influence soybean pathogens is also necessary. Therefore, the objective of my research is to evaluate the impact of higher rates of phosphorus and potassium on soil borne pathogens and soybean cyst nematode populations. Ultimately, this study will also help provide a better understanding of the diversity, abundance, and distribution of soil borne soybean pathogens in Ohio.
