• Main thesis project: Understanding the powdery mildew disease affecting the ornamental plant Phlox: combining basic and applied research for sustainable disease management

Development of in vitro bioassays to grow pathogens causing powdery mildew (microscopy techniques, microbiology, tissue culture).
Germplasm screening of Phlox resistance to powdery mildew.
Population genetics of powdery mildew Phlox: MLST analyzes (PCR, MEGA, FigTree, SplitTree, DnaSP, mafft, trimal).
Comparative genomics of Phlox powdery mildew (computer programming: regular expressions, Python).

• Auxiliary projects and acquired skills:

Evaluation of fungicides for private companies.
Phenotyping of sycamores for their resistance to various pathogens causing cankers and leaf spots.
Statistical analyzes (R, SAS).
Diagnostics and reports of new pathogens in Ohio.
