When Dr. Schmitthenner first joined the Department of Plant Pathology in the 1960s, Phytophthora sojae was an emerging soybean disease problem. In his career, he conducted pioneering work and developed management programs for Phytophthora and Pythium root rots of soybean and other crops. Dr. Schmitthenner served as associate editor of Phytopathology and Plant Disease. He was elected Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society in 1984, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the North Central Division of APS in 1987.
