This course is designed to explore the molecular biology and genetics of fungal microorganisms.  It will begin with discussions of fungal biology for the major clades and then advance to the molecular underpinnings of growth, development, and interactions with diverse hosts.  Case studies will focus on pathogens of plants as well as humans/animals.  Practical uses and applications of fungal products in industry may be covered.  Research to be reviewed will include current whole genome based studies of fungi, including proteomic and system biology analyses.

This will be a literature based course considering classic studies as well as the most current findings.  Students will be expected to review assigned articles prior to class and drive discussions.  Throughout the quarter each student will present 1-2 times.  The course will be letter-graded based on the quality of presentations and participation in discussions.

The meetings are open to other faculty/post-docs interested in the discussions.  This course will count toward the Plant Pathology PhD requirement for 16 credits of 700-800 level Plant Pathology courses.
