Field and Woodland Fungi (3 cr)

Learn about the fascinating fungi found in the fields and woodlands of Ohio.  Experience the mushroom foray (fun field trips!).  Learn about the biology and ecology of fungi.  The course includes forays, traditional classes and online modules.  Offered via Columbus-Wooster videolink. Textbook (required): National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, by Gary H. Lincoff. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., New York, 1981.


Course Objectives

  • Identify many of the common macrofungi of Ohio fields and woodlands
  • Describe the characteristics that set fungi apart from other life forms
  • Describe the role and importance of fungi in field and woodland ecosystems
  • Collect and preserve fungi for reference and teaching purposes
  • Advise others about the dangers of indiscriminate eating of wild mushrooms
  • Find sources of reliable information on fungi


Field trip locations subject to change.

Weekday forays are Oct. 20, 27, 29 in Central Ohio

Saturday forays are Sept. 12 in the Hocking Hills region with the Ohio Mushroom Society (optional pre-term field trip); and Oct. 10 and Nov. 7 in the Columbus/Central Ohio area
