06/04/2009 - Plant Associated Bacteria Can Improve Crop Health in Acidic Soils. Brian McSpadden Gardener's work on the use of bacteria to improve corn yields may lead to more sustainable production practices for use in organic agriculture and in developing countries. This work was part of the M.S. thesis of Plant Pathology graduate Rosa Raudales, was recently published in the journal, Phytopathology:

June 2009 - Chan Ho Park, PhD student with Guo-Liang Wang, was named recipient of the C. C. Allison Award to honor academic achievement and service to the Department of Plant Pathology. |
Park was recognized for outstanding research, excellent academic record, and service to the Plant Pathology Graduate Students Association and the Graduate Studies Committee. Park will be presented with an $800 cash award and plaque, and his name will be engraved on the C. C. Allison award plaques in the Columbus and Wooster department offices. The award was announced at an end-of-quarter gathering at the home of Thomas and Ellen Mitchell on June 6, with several faculty and students in attendance. Inductees are honored by the Ohio Wine Producers Association for significant contributions to the Ohio wine and grape industry. Congratulations to Laura Bruner, Plant Health Management Honors student, on being awarded the prestigious Star of Agriscience Award by the National FFA Organization at their annual convention in Indianapolis. Laura, a member of the Pettisville FFA Chapter in Ohio, was presented with a $4000 check and a plaque. Amanda, a Plant Health Management Honors student working with Dr. Dennis Lewandowski, will participate in five presentations throughout Sao Paulo University with her research poster, "Greenhouse sanitation: Efficacy of disinfectants on cutting blades using Tobacco mosaic virus on petunia as a model." |
