Our plant path students created the winning video for the APS "Dirty Jobs in Plant Pathology" contest. The contest sought entertaining and educational videos in the theme of Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs" television show. The storyline was centered on rotten potatoes and plant disease diagnosis. > View the video |

Seeing old friends is one of the best parts about annual meetings like this. Attendees gathered at an evening social which included several alumni gatherings. To commemorate the occasion of the APS Centennial, we commissioned two copies of artwork that were signed by past and current members of the department in attendance, to be framed for our offices in Columbus and Wooster.

1:30 am CST (2:30 pm EST). The bus arrives in downtown Minneapolis. Everyone starts to stir, except for Kara Riggs, who is fast asleep, as the interior bus lights are turned on and we start to maneuver through the city. Mike Boehm explains that skywalks connect the downtown buildings and hotels, including the convention center. The bus stops at each of several hotels, dropping off passengers at each stop. Mike instructs someone to wake up Kara.

6:30 pm EST. We are west of Chicago. The bus inhabitants are munching on apples, cookies and crackers. Here's what people on the bus are reading:
Clara Zumpetta, The Other Bolelyn Girl by Phillippa Gregory; Maria Andrea Ortega, Genetics and Genomics of Soybean; Tom Mitchell, A Life Decoded by J. Craig Venter; Lee Wilson, Devil in the White City by Erik Larson; Fulya Baysal Gurel, Veda by Ayse Kulin; Nate Kleczewski, Intensity by Dean Koontz; Robbie Beaulieu, The Power of One; Hehe Wang, a gene silencing article from the Plant Journal; Cunyu Li, literature on Fusarium head blight of wheat; Nancy Taylor, Midnight in Ruby Bayou by Elizabeth Lowell; Bridget Meiring, History in the Making by Kyle Ward.
4:30 pm EST. Sally Miller is carrying antiques and artwork. They are among the items that will be up for auction at the Office of International Programs' Silent Auction. Proceeds fund a program callled the Global Experience, a program aimed at helping young plant pathologists work with scientists in developing countries on training and outrach.
Among the items that Sally is bringing to the auction include a painting of Alternaria spores by former faculty member Curt Leben. Leben's paintings grace the walls of various plant pathology rooms in Columbus and Wooster. Sally also has an old microscope and some beautiful copper (or copper-like) pipette containers, which have potential new life as floral vases.
This year several vintage and cultural items are up for bid and interest in the auction has really grown over the past four years. The Silent Auction is Sunday, July 26 during the Opening Centennial Celebration from 6-8 pm.
2:35 pm EST. We're all looking forward to the special events of the APS Centennial Meeting. Ohio State extends special thanks to all APS staff and members for their hard work in putting on this extraordinary celebration.
We're on the road again, heading towards Illinois.
Everyone's pretty docile and enjoying the bus ride. Dr. Sally Miller, whose daughter works for Pixar, has brought an extensive collection of Pixar DVDs (but not Wall-E). We've watched Ratatouille and now, upon special request, The Incredibles.
1:30 pm. A lunch stop in Indiana brought many questions about who we are and where we were going. After a quick stop at Radio Shack to purchase forgotten cables, we're now online.

10:20 am. We begin the bus journey. 40 people in red t-shirts. Where's Selby? Who's Selby? The t-shirts explain it all - A.D. Selby, Ohio's first experiment station plant pathologist, was instrumental in the formation of the American Phytopathological Society in 1908. He was a charter member, the society's first vice-president, and the third president. The department's home on Wooster bears the name, Selby Hall. History + Mike Boehm's ideas + Kirk Broder's artwork = a busload of Ohio State plant pathologists donning Where's Selby t-shirts. Hard to miss. |
