Graduate Funding and FAQs

Graduate associateships and graduate fellowships, funded by the University, OARDC, grants, contracts and other sources, are the main types of financial assistance offered to students in the Department of Plant Pathology.

Most decisions regarding funding are made between January and March for admission the following September. Offers are made on a competitive basis. The Department of Plant Pathology accepts applications throughout the year. However, students interested in admission for Autumn 2008 are encourage to apply as soon as possible.  If you have questions, please contact our Academic Programs Coordinator, Monica Lewandowski - lewandowski.52@osu.edu, or tel. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the deadline for graduate program application?

The Department of Plant Pathology accepts applications throughout the year.  However, most decisions regarding admission and financial support (research associateships, fellowships, etc.) are made between January and March for the following Autumn.  For admission in Autumn 2009, to receive full consideration of financial support, international students should aim to apply by November 30, 2008, and domestic students shoud apply in December 2008 or at the latest January 15, 2009.  This is to ensure sufficient time for processing of your application by both the university and the department.  Please note that other programs may have other deadlines.

What are important factors for admission?

A four-year baccalaureate or higher degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited college or university is required prior to beginning graduate studies.  All application materials are reviewed by the Department of Plant Pathology to assess the applicant's interests and ability to pursue a graduate degree in plant pathology.  More information can be found in our Application Procedures, and in the Graduate School's Application Instructions.

Where do I send Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and/or TOEFL scores?

The testing agency must report GRE (General Test) and TOEFL scores directly to the The Ohio State University (ETS institution code #1592).  Photocopies are not considered official scores.  The Department of Plant Pathology does not have a department code and does not require a subject test.

Does the Department of Plant Pathology have a minimum GRE requirement?

The Department of Plant Pathology requires GRE General Test scores as part of the application process. As a guideline, the Department of Plant Pathology desires a minimum combined GRE score of 1160 for the Verbal + Quantitative portions of the exam, and 4.0 or greater on the Analytical Writing portion. This is a guideline but not an absolute minimum score requirement for admission to our program.

Where should the letters of recommendation be sent?

Letters may be submitted online through the Graduate Admissions website, or paper copies written on recommenders' original letterhead stationery may be mailed to the Department of Plant Pathology (address below).

Paper copies should be accompanied by completed Ohio State Reference Forms found at http://admissions.osu.edu/apps/pdfs/refer.pdf
