"Plant Pathatical" tours are designed to enhance collaborations between OSU Extension Educators and the Department of Plant Pathology. Jim Chatfield, Extension Specialist, and Erik Draper, Extension Educator in Geauga County, led a Plant Pathatical Extension tour of the department and Columbus campus on April 30. Joining the group were Zach Rinkes, Extension Educator from Erie County, and Mike Loos, ANR Extension Educator from Cuyahoga County. The group visited programs, classes, toured the campus, and even ran into President Gordon Gee, who greeted the group warmly and posed for a photo (left to right, Monica Lewandowski, Sarah Ellis, John Koenig, Mike Loos, President Gee, Erik Draper, Mike Boehm, Zack Rinkes and Enrico Bonello). Not pictured is Jim Chatfield, who is taking the photo.

2nd place, PhD students, Nathan Kleczewski, "Potential regulation of ectomycorrhizae by paper birch in response to soil type and fertilization: Linking the growth differentiation balance hypothesis and carbon allocation models." Advisor: Pierluigi Bonello.
2nd place, MS students, Rosa Raudales, "In vitro screening for biocontrol potential abilities of Ohio bacterial isolates over tomato pathogens." Advisor: Brian McSpadden Gardener. This is Rosa's second consecutive 2nd place award in the OARDC Conference poster competition.

Dr. Laurence V. Madden, Professor and Associate Chair, will be honored as 2008 recipient of the Jakob Eriksson Prize for Plant Pathology. Dr. Madden will be presented with a gold medal at the 9th International Congress of Plant Pathology in Torino, Italy on Aug. 29. |
The honor, only awarded every five years, was established in memory of Jakob Eriksson, a prominent Swedish mycologist and plant pathologist.

Dr. Madden was also named the 2008 Fisher Lecturer at the Rothamsted Research, a world leading center on arable crops located in Harpenden, United Kingdom. Madden delivered his presentation, "Contemporary Approaches to Plant Disease Forecasting: A Case Study of Fusarium Head Blight of Wheat," on March 31. |

Dr. Thomas Mitchell was selected to be a presenter in a special session, "Faces of the Future in Mycology - A Look to the Future," at the American Phytopathological Society Centennial Meeting on July 27 in Minneapolis. The session was designed to acknowledge "up and comers" in plant pathology. We congratulate Dr. Mitchell on this special honor! |

Southern Ohio Corn May Be At Risk for Stewart's Wilt
WOOSTER, Ohio - Southern Ohio's corn crop may face a high risk of Stewart's bacterial wilt and leaf blight this growing season. The disease is caused by a bacterium carried and spread by adult flea beetles. More
March 2008 - Dr. Pierce A. Paul, Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology, will receive the William Boright Hewitt and Maybelle Ellen Ball Hewitt Award at the APS Centennial Meeting, July 26-30, in Minneapolis. This award recognizes a scientist within five years of their PhD degree who has made an outstanding, innovative contribution directed toward the control of plant disease.

Dr. Michael J. Boehm, Professor and Department Chair, will also be honored at the APS Centennial Meeting as a recipient of the APS Excellence in Teaching Award, in recognition of his outstanding teaching in plant pathology. Dr. Anne Dorrance, Associate Professor of Plant Pathology, received a Special Meritorious Award from the American Soybean Association. Dorrance was nominated by the Ohio Soybean Association in recognition of her research expertise and dedicated service to Ohio's soybean industry. |
Dorrance's major accomplishments include the discovery of the Phytophthora resistance locus, Rps8, a breakthrough for breeding disease resistance in soybeans. She was also lauded for her leadership in the soybean rust program. Dorrance's Extension work includes disease management programs for field crops in Ohio with emphasis on soybeans, wheat and corn.

March 14 - Plant Pathology hosted nine middle school and high school girls for Women in Science Day on the Ohio State Columbus campus. Graduate student Sarah Ellis and Academic Program Coordinator Monica Lewandowski set up demonstrations and led the students through a plant virus detection activity (material provided by Dr. Dennis Lewandowski).
March 2008 - Dr. Feng Qu has accepted a position in the Department of Plant Pathology as Assistant Professor and will begin his appointment in October 2008. Dr. Qu, whose area of expertise is molecular plant virology, is currently at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. His laboratory will be located in Wooster. We welcome Dr. Qu and his family to Ohio State!

Amanda Hayes, Plant Health Management (Honors) major at The Ohio State University, was awarded research grant in the Ohio Agriculture and Research Development Center (OARDC) Director's Undergraduate Research Competition. Her proposal, "Greenhouse Sanitation: Efficacy of Disinfectants on Cutting Blades using Tobacco mosaic virus on Petunia as a Model," is part of her Honors thesis project with Dr. Dennis Lewandowski. Hayes is evaluating sanitation methods for propagation of Petunia. Her project goal is to develop safe and effective protocols to minimize spread of Tobacco mosaic virus and other pathogens in nursery operations.
Feb 21, 2008 - Nick Weidenbenner, Department of Plant Pathology, Plant Health Management undergraduate major, Honors Program. Seminar, 1:00-1:30 pm, Kottman Hall 201C and videolinked to Selby 203. Nick will present a presentation about his honors thesis research with Dr. Enrico Bonello. He is studying plant-pathogen-pest interactions as it pertains to Emerald Ash Borer. The informal presentation will last about 20-30 minutes. All are invited join us and learn more about the great work in our undergraduate program!
