06/26/08 - The Andersons, Inc., in collaboration with the Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center et al., was awarded a $5 million State of Ohio Third Frontier grant to develop advanced granule technology for delivery and application of chemicals to turfgrass, landscape and agricultural crops.  Ohio State researchers involved in the project include: Michael Boehm (Plant Pathology), Erdal Ozkan (Agricultural and Biol. Engineering), Dave Gardner, Hannah Mathers, Claudio Pasian, Mark Loux and Mark Bennett (Horticulture & Crop Science), Nick Basta (Environmental and Natural Resources) and Dave Shetlar (Entomology).

Plant Cell has the highest impact factor of primary research journals in plant biology.

Maria Soledad Benitez was awarded an  Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service from Ohio State's Council of Graduate Students.  Soledad is a doctoral candidate studying with Dr. Brian McSpadden Gardener.  The grant was used to help fund travel for her poster presentation, "Identification of Bacteria for Soil-borne Disease Suppression,"  (M.S. Benitez and B. McSpadden Gardener) at the American Society for Microbiology 108th General Meeting in Boston, Mass., June 1-5.


Kirk Broders, Nathan Kleczewski and Miguel Vega Sanchez were named 2008 recipients of the C.C. Allison Award, in recognition of high achievement in graduate research and service to the Department of Plant Pathology.  The awards were announced at the Plant Pathology seminar on May 27, which was also Miguel's PhD exit seminar.  Congratulations to three outstanding graduate students on this prestigious honor!

Congratulations to Michael J. Boehm, Professor and Department Chair, who received an Undergraduate Research Mentor Award at the Denman Forum.

Dr. Boehm, who was nominated by Robert Beaulieu, was one of five faculty research mentors recognized for exceptional service. 


Plant Health Management majors were honored at the Plant Sciences Banquet on May 21 at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus.  The event honored scholarship winners and student activities from the Departments of Horticulture & Crop Science and Plant Pathology.  Highlights from Plant Pathology's undergraduate student organization, Plant Health and Resource Management (PHARM), were presented by club advisor Dr. Monica Lewandowski.  Club president Nick Weidenbenner introduced PHARM officers.  Ramona Powell was also recognized for her contributions to the banquet.  David Snodgrass, greenhouse coordinator for Horticulture & Crop Science and Plant Pathology greenhouses, was recognized as Outstanding Staff Member by the students.  Congratulations to all our outstanding Plant Health Management majors on an outstanding year > list of accomplishments

The Department of Plant Pathology hosted Craig Austin, a PhD student at Cornell University, as part of a graduate student exchange program between Ohio State, Cornell and Penn State.  Earlier this year, Nathan Kleczewski visited Penn State's Department of Plant Pathology.  Craig visited Columbus and Wooster during his stay, May 21-22.  He presented a seminar, "Impact of sunlight and its components on severity of grapevine powdery mildew."



Congratulations to Laura Bruner, Amanda Hayes and Nick Weidenbenner, who each received a 2008 CFAES Undergraduate University Research Scholarship and grant for their Honors thesis research proposals.  Laura's honors thesis advisor is Dr. Erich Grotewold in the Department of Plant Cellular and Molecular Biology; Amanda's honors thesis advisor is Dr. Dennis Lewandowski, and Nick's honors thesis advisor is Dr. P. Bonello in the Department of Plant Pathology.

The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the Ohio Agricultural Science and Bioproducts Research Scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Undergraduate scholarships of $3,000 each have been awarded to our Plant Health Management majors Laura Bruner, Kate Gearhart, and Kara Riggs; Crop Science major Jason Greve, agricultural engineering major Brian Herringshaw, and a Graduate scholarship of $5,000 has been awarded to Plant Pathology PhD student Margaret Ellis.  Congratulations to the scholarship winners on their outstanding achievements!

"Plant Pathatical" tours are designed to enhance collaborations between OSU Extension Educators and the Department of Plant Pathology.  Jim Chatfield, Extension Specialist, and Erik Draper, Extension Educator in Geauga County, led a Plant Pathatical Extension tour of the department and Columbus campus on April 30.  Joining the group were Zach Rinkes, Extension Educator from Erie County, and Mike Loos, ANR Extension Educator from Cuyahoga County.  The group visited programs, classes, toured the campus, and even ran into President Gordon Gee, who greeted the group warmly and posed for a photo (left to right, Monica Lewandowski, Sarah Ellis, John Koenig, Mike Loos, President Gee, Erik Draper, Mike Boehm, Zack Rinkes and Enrico Bonello).  Not pictured is Jim Chatfield, who is taking the photo.

Dr. Laurence V. Madden, Professor and Associate Chair, will be honored as 2008 recipient of the Jakob Eriksson Prize for Plant Pathology.  Dr. Madden will be presented with a gold medal at the 9th International Congress of Plant Pathology (www.icpp2008.org), Aug. 24-29 in Torino, Italy.

The honor, only awarded every five years, was established in memory of Jakob Eriksson, a prominent Swedish mycologist and plant pathologist.


Dr. Madden was also named the 2008 Fisher Lecturer at the Rothamsted Research, a world leading center on arable crops located in Harpenden, United Kingdom.  Madden delivered his presentation, "Contemporary Approaches to Plant Disease Forecasting: A Case Study of Fusarium Head Blight of Wheat," on March 31.

Southern Ohio Corn May Be At Risk for Stewart's Wilt

WOOSTER, Ohio - Southern Ohio's corn crop may face a high risk of Stewart's bacterial wilt and leaf blight this growing season. The disease is caused by a bacterium carried and spread by adult flea beetles.  More


March 2008 - Dr. Pierce A. Paul, Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology, will receive the William Boright Hewitt and Maybelle Ellen Ball Hewitt Award at the APS Centennial Meeting, July 26-30, in Minneapolis.  This award recognizes a scientist within five years of their PhD degree who has made an outstanding, innovative contribution directed toward the control of plant disease.

Dr. Michael J. Boehm, Professor and Department Chair, will also be honored at the APS Centennial Meeting as a recipient of the APS Excellence in Teaching Award, in recognition of his outstanding teaching in plant pathology.  The Department of Plant Pathology proudly congratulates to Dr. Paul and Dr. Boehm!

Dorrance ASA 

Dr. Anne Dorrance, Associate Professor of Plant Pathology, received a Special Meritorious Award from the American Soybean Association.  Dorrance was nominated by the Ohio Soybean Association in recognition of her research expertise and dedicated service to Ohio's soybean industry.

Dorrance's major accomplishments include the discovery of the Phytophthora resistance locus, Rps8, a breakthrough for breeding disease resistance in soybeans.   She was also lauded for her leadership in the soybean rust program.  Dorrance's Extension work includes disease management programs for field crops in Ohio with emphasis on soybeans, wheat and corn.

Miguel Vega Sanchez, doctoral candidate in Plant Pathology (Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology) was awarded a travel grant to attend the Joint Meeting of the American Society of Plant Biologists and the Sociedad Mexicana de Bioquimica, June 26 - July 1, Merida, Mexico.

March 14 - Plant Pathology hosted nine middle school and high school girls for Women in Science Day on the Ohio State Columbus campus.  Graduate student Sarah Ellis and Academic Program Coordinator Monica Lewandowski set up demonstrations and led the students through a plant virus detection activity (material provided by Dr. Dennis Lewandowski).


March 2008 - Dr. Feng Qu has accepted a position in the Department of Plant Pathology as Assistant Professor and will begin his appointment in October 2008.  Dr. Qu, whose area of expertise is molecular plant virology, is currently at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.  His laboratory will be located in Wooster.  We welcome Dr. Qu and his family to Ohio State!


March 2008 - Amanda Hayes, Plant Health Management major (Honors Program), will be honored as one of Ohio State's top undergraduates in the President's Salute to Undergraduate Academic Achievement.  Hayes and her Honors thesis advisor, Dr. Dennis Lewandowski, will attend an awards dinner on April 29 at the Fawcett Center.  Congratulations!

Amanda Hayes, Plant Health Management (Honors) major at The Ohio State University, was awarded research grant in the Ohio Agriculture and Research Development Center (OARDC) Director's Undergraduate Research Competition.  Her proposal, "Greenhouse Sanitation: Efficacy of Disinfectants on Cutting Blades using Tobacco mosaic virus on Petunia as a Model," is part of her Honors thesis project with Dr. Dennis Lewandowski.  Hayes is evaluating sanitation methods for propagation of Petunia.  Her project goal is to develop safe and effective protocols to minimize spread of Tobacco mosaic virus and other pathogens in nursery operations.



Feb 21, 2008 -  Nick Weidenbenner, Department of Plant Pathology, Plant Health Management undergraduate major, Honors Program.  Seminar, 1:00-1:30 pm, Kottman Hall 201C and videolinked to Selby 203.  Nick will present a presentation about his honors thesis research with Dr. Enrico Bonello.  He is studying plant-pathogen-pest interactions as it pertains to Emerald Ash Borer.  The informal presentation will last about 20-30 minutes.  All are invited join us and learn more about the great work in our undergraduate program!
