July 15 - Maria Soledad Benitez, PhD Exit Seminar.  "Applied T-RFLP Analyses for the Identification and Characterization of Microbial Populations Associated with Damping-off Incidence."  1 pm, Selby 203 - videolink to Kottman 333.  Benitez is a doctoral candidate with Dr. Brian McSpadden Gardener.


Over 25 undergraduate students gathered for department tours in Columbus and Wooster.  The students, who are from universities around the country and world, are participating in one of several internship programs or working as student assistants.

Amanda Hayes was one of five Denman Undergraduate Forum presenters selected for a one-week Brazil Research Exchange Program this fall.

Amanda, a Plant Health Management Honors student, will travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil in November to present her research poster, "Greenhouse sanitation: Efficacy of disinfectants on cutting blades using Tobacco mosaic virus on petunia as a model."

Robert Beaulieu was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and honored as one of Ohio State's top graduates in June.  In the fall, he will travel abroad to study with Jose Pascual, Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicasa del Segura, Murcia, Spain.    Robbie, who graduated in June with a BA in Comparative Studies, magna cum laude with honors, completed an honors thesis with Michael Boehm and is currently a summer intern in plant pathology.  Robbie was part of the "Top of the Class" splash feature on the OSU website.


Congratulations to Sawsan Elateek, Kirk Broders and Annemarie Nagle, who were awarded travel grants from the North Central American Phytopathological Society (APS) region to attend the APS Centennial, July 26-30, in Minneapolis.

06/26/08 - The Andersons, Inc., in collaboration with the Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center et al., was awarded a $5 million State of Ohio Third Frontier grant to develop advanced granule technology for delivery and application of chemicals to turfgrass, landscape and agricultural crops.  Ohio State researchers involved in the project include: Michael Boehm (Plant Pathology), Erdal Ozkan (Agricultural and Biol. Engineering), Dave Gardner, Hannah Mathers, Claudio Pasian, Mark Loux and Mark Bennett (Horticulture & Crop Science), Nick Basta (Environmental and Natural Resources) and Dave Shetlar (Entomology).

Vega allison award

Just published: Vega-Sanchez et al. Plant Cell 10.1105/tpc.108.058610.  Advance online publication www.plantcell.org.

Plant Cell has the highest impact factor of primary research journals in plant biology.

Miguel E. Vega-Sanchez, Lirong Zeng, Songbiao Chen, Hei Leung, and Guo-Liang Wang.  2008.  SPIN1, a K Homology Domain Protein Negatively Regulated and Ubiquitinated by the E3 Ubiquitin Ligase SPL11, Is Involved in Flowering Time Control in Rice.  Vega-Sanchez (pictured right, with Dr. Guo-liang Wang) is a doctoral candidate studying with Dr. Wang.

Bennett.  2008.  Cover Crop Mulch and Fungicide Program Affect Development of Septoria Leaf Spot and Marketable Yield in Processing Tomato Production.  Hortscience 43: 807-810.  (Part of Wyendandt's dissertation research)

Maria Soledad Benitez was awarded an  Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service from Ohio State's Council of Graduate Students.  Soledad is a doctoral candidate studying with Dr. Brian McSpadden Gardener.  The grant was used to help fund travel for her poster presentation, "Identification of Bacteria for Soil-borne Disease Suppression,"  (M.S. Benitez and B. McSpadden Gardener) at the American Society for Microbiology 108th General Meeting in Boston, Mass., June 1-5.


Kirk Broders, Nathan Kleczewski and Miguel Vega Sanchez were named 2008 recipients of the C.C. Allison Award, in recognition of high achievement in graduate research and service to the Department of Plant Pathology.  The awards were announced at the Plant Pathology seminar on May 27, which was also Miguel's PhD exit seminar.  Congratulations to three outstanding graduate students on this prestigious honor!
