06/04/2009 - Plant Associated Bacteria Can Improve Crop Health in Acidic Soils. Brian McSpadden Gardener's work on the use of bacteria to improve corn yields may lead to more sustainable production practices for use in organic agriculture and in developing countries. This work was part of the M.S. thesis of Plant Pathology graduate Rosa Raudales, was recently published in the journal, Phytopathology:
Raudales, R.E., Stone, E., and McSpadden Gardener, B. B. 2009. Seed treatment with 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol-producing Pseudomonads improves crop health in low-pH soils by altering patterns of nutrient uptake. Phytopathology 99(5): 506-511.

June 2009 - Chan Ho Park, PhD student with Guo-Liang Wang, was named recipient of the C. C. Allison Award to honor academic achievement and service to the Department of Plant Pathology. |
Park was recognized for outstanding research, excellent academic record, and service to the Plant Pathology Graduate Students Association and the Graduate Studies Committee. Park will be presented with an $800 cash award and plaque, and his name will be engraved on the C. C. Allison award plaques in the Columbus and Wooster department offices. The award was announced at an end-of-quarter gathering at the home of Thomas and Ellen Mitchell on June 6, with several faculty and students in attendance. May 13, 2009 - Laura Bruner, Plant Health Management Honors student, won a third place award in the Agricultural/Environmental Science division of the Denman Undegraduate Research Forum for her honors thesis, "The study of Arabidopsis thaliana trichomes for source of chemical defense." Bruner also won first place in the CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum, Environmental and Plant Sciences Division for her research. |

Laura Bruner (far left) was honored as a Top 10 CFAES Senior and Jessica Schafer was honored as a Top 20 CFAES Senior. Bruner is getting married in June and moving to New Zealand, where she will pursue an agricultural career. Schafer was an intern in Dennis Lewandowski's laboratory and spent winter quarter on a study abroad trip to Uganda and Tanzania. She will pursue an MS in plant pathology at Purdue University. |

Miguel Vega Sánchez was honored with the 2009 OARDC William E. Krauss Director's Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies for the best paper by a doctoral student in 2008. Dr. Guo-Liang Wang was his PhD advisor. Vega Sánchez and Wang were recognized at the OARDC Annual Research Conference on April 23 in Columbus. > More |
The award-winning publication, published in The Plant Cell, provides the first evidence linking the molecular and cellular processes of ubiquitination and RNA/DNA metabolism in flowering time control in plants. These findings could lead to new strategies to improve disease resistance as well as flowering in crop plants. Nick Weidenennber, Plant Health Management Honors student, was selected to receive the William F. Helms Student Scholarship from the USDA APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine Program (PPQ). Weidenbenner received a $5000 scholarship and a work experience internship at the USDA APHIS PPQ office in Pickerington, Ohio. |

Mike Ellis was inducted into the Ohio Wine Hall of Fame at the Ohio Wine and Grape Conference on Feb. 16 in Wooster. Inductees are honored by the Ohio Wine Producers Association for significant contributions to the Ohio wine and grape industry. Ellis' induction signifies the importance of his research, Extension and education programs on disease management. Congratulatios to Dr. Ellis on this career achievement.
