Areas of Special Interest

Dr. Dorrance's research interests include the study of root and stem fungal pathogens of soybeans with a major emphasis on Phytophthora sojae and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. In addition she is part of a team which is exploring incorporation of resistance to insect feeding as a means to manage the soybean virus, Bean pod mottle virus. Her main focus is on soybean disease management through the identification of novel sources of resistance, identification of the genes and/or mechanisms that contribute to the resistance and assisting Ohio's soybean cultivar and germplasm program in incorporating these findings into adapted soybean lines. Dr. Dorrance is also interested in identifying the best integrated health management practices for soybeans. Her objective is to implement integrated disease management systems for no-till and reduced tillage production systems that are still profitable for Ohio's producers. She is a member of the OSU Extension Agronomic Crops Team, serving the field crop producers of the state. Dr. Dorrance is quite active in several regional and multi-institutional efforts. Current research is focused on identifying disease management strategies to reduce losses associated with Phytophthora sojae in the North Central Region. Dr. Dorrance is leading this effort through funding provided by the North Central Soybean Research Program. She and Dr. Steve St. Martin (Horticulture and Crop Science) are part of a team with researchers from Virginia Bioinformatics Institute which are identifying genes associated with partial resistance to P. sojae through the use of gene expression in both soybeans and P. sojae using microarrays.
